Islamabad, 8 June 2024 (TDI): Pakistan has been elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2025-2026. Pakistan received overwhelming support in the elections held by the UN General Assembly in New York.
Besides Pakistan, Somalia, Panama, Greece, and Denmark have also succeeded in the elections at the General Assembly. Denmark got 184 votes followed by Panama 183, Pakistan and Greece received 182 votes each and Somalia received 179. Out of the total 190 votes, five abstained in the secret ballot and three voted against Pakistan.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra expressed gratitude to all members of the UN General Assembly for their confidence in Pakistan. She thanked all the members for electing Pakistan as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
Furthermore, she also expressed his gratitude to members of the Asia-Pacific Group for endorsing Pakistan’s candidature for the Council.
Pakistan is elected for the eighth time as a non-permanent member. It brings to the UN Security Council a rich experience and a strong legacy of contributions towards international peace and security.
Pakistan manifests its strict adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. It also ensures its UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding endeavors across many regions.
According to reports, Pakistan will remain committed to pursuing a just and peaceful resolution of outstanding and ongoing disputes. Pakistan will oppose the resort to unilateral and illegal use or threat of use of force.
Furthermore, Pakistan will contribute to combatting terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Pakistan will ensure its support for effective UN peacekeeping, peace enforcement, and peacebuilding efforts. Pakistan will contribute effectively towards the resolution of regional and global crises.

Pakistan looks forward to working closely with the other members of the UN Security Council and with the broader UN Membership to uphold the UN Charter and pursue the vision of preventing war and promoting peace; fostering global prosperity and universal respect for human rights.
