Pakistan Warns UNSC of Global Threat After Israeli Strikes on Iran

United Nations (TDI): Pakistan has cautioned the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites represent a grave risk not just to the region, but to international peace and stability.

Speaking during an emergency UNSC session on Friday, Pakistan’s representative condemned the attacks as “unjustified and illegitimate.”

The Israeli strikes, carried out on Friday, reportedly hit key Iranian military targets including nuclear sites, missile production facilities, and senior military figures. Iran’s envoy to the UN claimed the strikes resulted in 78 deaths and injured more than 320 people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised message, declared that the attacks marked the start of a long-term campaign to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Explosions were reported across Iran, including at the Natanz uranium enrichment site. Iranian state media confirmed the deaths of six nuclear scientists and stated that the headquarters of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards in Tehran was among the targets. The Guards later confirmed that their commander, General Hossein Salami, had been killed.

Addressing the UNSC, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad condemned Israel’s actions, reaffirming Islamabad’s firm support for Iran’s sovereignty and its people.

He described the Israeli offensive as a serious breach of international law and urged the Council to act swiftly to stop further escalation.

The emergency meeting had been called at the request of Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who said Israel had crossed a dangerous threshold and must be held accountable. Pakistan, along with Algeria, China, and Russia, backed Iran’s demand for the session.

Speaking at the session, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized the far-reaching consequences of the attacks.

She echoed Secretary-General António Guterres’s plea for restraint, warning of the risk of a wider regional war.

“These developments come at a critical time when diplomatic efforts were beginning to show progress,” she added, noting that planned talks between the United States and Iran in Oman had now been cancelled.
