Pakistan Urges UNSC to Act on Regional Tensions, Kashmir

New York (TDI): In a significant diplomatic engagement at the United Nations, a Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by former Foreign Minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to take a more active role in maintaining peace and facilitating conflict resolution, especially in light of rising unilateral actions and regional instability.

During a meeting with Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the Permanent Representative of Guyana and current President of the Security Council, the delegation outlined Pakistan’s concerns about the worsening security situation in South Asia.

The visit was part of Islamabad’s broader outreach to alert global institutions about what it describes as provocative actions and aggression by India.

The Pakistani delegation emphasized the need for the Council to reinforce respect for international law and to work toward resolving long-standing disputes, especially particularly Jammu and Kashmir, which remains on the Council’s agenda under earlier resolutions.

Speaking at the session, Bilawal Bhutto sharply criticized India’s reaction to the recent Pahalgam incident, calling New Delhi’s accusations against Pakistan “unfounded and irresponsible,” given the absence of any credible investigation or verified evidence.

He slammed India for its unilateral military actions, including deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the arbitrary holding in abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).

“Pakistan has been a frontline victim of terrorism,” Bilawal said. “We reject terrorism in all its forms. But acts of terror must not be used as cover for unlawful and unilateral actions that jeopardize peace.”

He further urged the UNSC to support calls for a ceasefire, immediate restoration of normal treaty operations, and the resumption of a broad-based dialogue with India, focusing on resolving the Kashmir issue, which he described as central to lasting peace in South Asia.

The meeting highlighted Pakistan’s continuing diplomatic efforts to spotlight regional flashpoints and press for international engagement at the highest levels.
