Pakistan to Boost Climate Resilience in Children

ISLAMABAD September 04, 2024 (TDI): UNICEF-Pakistan and the Ministry of Climate Change have pledged to work together to build climate resilience among children in Pakistan.

The collaboration aims to protect children from the devastating impacts of climate change-caused disasters, such as floods and diseases.

During a meeting between UNICEF Representative Abdullah Fadil and Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam, both sides emphasized the need for joint efforts to address the vulnerability of children to climate change.

Romina Khurshid highlighted that children in Pakistan are increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events, which threaten their health, education, and overall well-being.

The meeting discussed the severe implications of climate change-caused disasters on children, particularly floods and heat waves.

Romina Khurshid noted that children are disproportionately affected by climate disruptions due to their developing bodies and lower adaptive capacity.

To address climate vulnerability among children, the meeting suggested targeted interventions in health, education, water, and sanitation sectors.

These include investing in healthcare infrastructure, building resilient educational facilities, supporting mental health, and prioritizing climate adaptation efforts in rural and low-income areas.

The UNICEF country representative assured the government of their organization’s technical and non-technical support to tackle climate vulnerability among children.

The collaboration aims to protect the future of the younger generation and ensure their overall well-being.
