Ties with Pakistan Entering 'Positive Phase,' Says Ambassador on Portugal National Day

Islamabad (TDI): The Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan, Paulo Guedes Domingues, described the partnership between his country and Pakistan as entering “a particularly positive phase,” in his message on the occasion of Portugal’s national day.

The Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities is celebrated annually on June 10 in honor of national poet Luís de Camões.

It serves as both a cultural milestone for the Portuguese diaspora and a diplomatic occasion for embassies around the world.

“To all Portuguese citizens who live, work and represent our country beyond its borders, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and admiration,” Domingues remarked.

Turning to ties with Pakistan, the Ambassador noted, “Our bilateral relationship is entering a particularly positive phase, marked by increasingly regular contacts and a shared commitment to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.”

Domingues noted that a growing number of Portuguese citizens have Pakistani roots, describing the community as “a living bridge between Portugal and Pakistan” that strengthens mutual understanding at the grassroots level.

“Over recent years, relations between Portugal and Pakistan have continued to develop positively across a range of areas, including political dialogue, trade and investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges,” the ambassador said.

The Ambassador also paid tribute to Portugal’s Honorary Consuls in Karachi and Lahore, Fakir S. Ayazuddin and Iftikhar Firoz, recognizing their role in fostering connections with Pakistani institutions, businesses, and citizens across the country.

Invoking the legacy of Camões, whose 16th-century epic Os Lusíadas chronicled Portugal’s age of exploration, Domingues drew a line from historical curiosity to present-day diplomacy, describing Portugal’s enduring spirit as one of “openness, discovery and dialogue between cultures.”

The message closed on a note of optimism, with the Ambassador expressing confidence in a stronger partnership ahead, grounded in “respect, dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding.”
