Pakistan Records First MERS Coronavirus Case

Islamabad (TDI): Health officials in Pakistan have confirmed that the country has successfully treated and reported its first case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and health officials reported on Friday that a 55-year-old man who had just returned from Saudi Arabia had tested positive for the virus.

The patient had been working in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. He landed in Pakistan on September 3 and was diagnosed with respiratory and cardiac problems the next day at a Jhelum private hospital.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad, the man tested positive for MERS-CoV before departing Saudi Arabia, which was notified by WHO and Saudi health officials.

Even withholding information from the patient’s medical team, Pakistani health officials initially maintained the case’s confidentiality.

On September 5, the patient was transferred to the Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi. There, he spent a few days in the intensive care unit (ICU) before receiving successful treatment and being discharged.

After testing, almost forty individuals who had contact with the patient were found virus-free.

First discovered in 2012, MERS-CoV spreads from dromedary camels to humans. There have been reports of it from 27 different nations, with many of the 2,630 cases worldwide occurring in Saudi Arabia.

Around 36% of people die from the virus, this number could be overstated because mild cases aren’t being reported.

The possibility for human-to-human transmission of MERS-CoV, particularly in healthcare settings where delays in isolation can allow the virus to spread, has been raised by this case and has added to global concerns about the infection.

To stop worldwide transmission, health officials have emphasized the significance of acting quickly in cases that may arise.

The virus is more harmful for people with underlying medical disorders like diabetes or chronic lung disease. MERS Coronavirus symptoms include fever, coughing, and difficulty in breathing.

Since the early symptoms frequently mimic those of other respiratory infections, early detection is still difficult.
