Islamabad, (TDI): Pakistan has been elected as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors for a two-year term from 2024-26.
The election, which was conducted by consensus at the 68th Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, marks Pakistan’s 21st term on the Board, representing the Middle East and South Asia region.
In a statement on Friday, the Foreign Office described Pakistan’s election as recognition of its longstanding commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its significant contribution to the IAEA’s policies and programmes.

As a founding member of the IAEA, Pakistan has maintained a collaborative relationship with the agency.
The country hosts the Anchor Centre for Cancer Care under the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative and operates four Collaboration Centres in areas including Food and Agriculture, Nuclear Safety and Security, Water Resource Management, and Innovative Nuclear Technology.
Pakistan’s Nuclear Power Plants
Pakistan currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW of clean energy, with an additional 1,200 MW plant under construction.
The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sharing its expertise in nuclear technology with other IAEA member states.

Earlier this month, Pakistan was also elected as President for the Tenth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).
