Pakistan Elected as Vice Chair of UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee

United Nations (TDI): In a significant development, Pakistan has been elected vice-chair of the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee and will also chair the UNSC’s 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee in 2025.

This marks a major diplomatic victory for Pakistan on the international stage.

Following the conflict with India over the Pahalgam attack, a high-level parliamentary delegation headed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited the UN headquarters in New York.

The delegation is engaged in discussing Pakistan’s stance on regional tensions during their visit to the United States, urging adherence to international law and promoting amicable ties with neighbors.

The delegation held several meetings with the President of the General Assembly, members of the UNSC, OIC ambassadors, media representatives, civil society members, and the Pakistani diaspora.

While condemning the attacks against civilians in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Pakistan highlighted the illegal actions of India.

The updated list of chairs for UNSC’s subsidiary bodies indicates Denmark as the incoming chair for the 1267 ISIL (Da’ish) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee in 2025, with Russia and Sierra Leone serving as vice-chairs. Algeria will lead the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee, with France, Pakistan, and Russia as its vice-chairs on the 15-member committee.

Pakistan will also chair the UNSC, 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee, in 2025. This committee monitors the actions like freezing of assets, travel restrictions and a ban on arms for those individual and groups associated with Taliban endangering peace and stability in Afghanistan. Guyana and Russia will serve as vice-chairs of the Taliban Sanctions Committee.

These postings will lead Pakistan at the center stage of global debate and policymaking on counterterrorism as well as regional stability.
