Pakistan Dispatches First Batch of Relief Items to Myanmar

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan has sent out the first consignment of relief items to Myanmar for its people affected by the devastating earthquake, last week on Friday.

The severe and deadly earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has crippled the country and rescue work is still underway to pull people out of rubble.

In the spirit of helping other countries in times of crises, Pakistan has announced a total of seventy tons relief items for Myanmar. So far the first flight, carrying thirty five tons, has taken off from the Islamabad International Airport.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal was present at the airport to see off the flight carrying 565 Tents, 210 Tarpaulins, 2000 Blankets, 1 Ton of Readymade Food, 0.5 Tons of Medicines, and 10 Water Modules.

The remaining thirty five tons is expected to be sent to Myanmar soon, via another flight, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan said in a press release.

“Under the direction of Prime Minister Muhamamd Shehbaz Sharif, the Government of Pakistan is dispatching relief goods for the earthquake victims in Myanmar,” the statement noted.

It further added that “Upon arrival in Yangon, the cargo will be received by Pakistan Ambassador and Defense Attaché, who will hand over the supplies to Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare & Resettlement for distribution to those affected by the disaster.”

Prior to the dispatch, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with the Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council and Prime Minister of Myanmar – Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and assured him of Pakistan’s support in this difficult time.

He also expressed condolences for the lives claimed by this earthquake.

Many countries are sending relief supplies, rescue teams, and technical support to Myanmar to rescue people people and move them to safe shelters.

China and Russia were among the first countries to send rescue teams to Myanmar. Soon after, the European Union also announced financial aid and satellite supervision to track the situation on ground.
