United Nations (TDI): Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take decisive action to enforce a ceasefire in Gaza, advocating for punitive measures against Israel, including an arms embargo, due to its aggressive actions in the region.
During a day-long debate on the Middle East situation, Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, expressed frustration, stating that “pleading with Israel has done no good.”
He called for the mobilization of political consensus to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which permits the Security Council to take enforcement actions to maintain international peace and security.
Ambassador Akram emphasized that Israel’s continued aggression is not only destabilizing the region but also poses a systemic threat to global peace and security.
He characterized Israel’s behavior as unprecedented, calling for robust measures to hold the country accountable for its actions, including an arms embargo and judicial mechanisms to address crimes committed in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

Opening the debate, UN’s Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, warned that the ongoing conflict is diminishing prospects for a resolution, describing the current situation as the “most dangerous juncture in the Middle East in decades.”
He noted the immense destruction in Gaza, with thousands displaced as winter approaches, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation.
Ambassador Akram condemned what he termed the “egregious violations of international humanitarian law,” referring to the ongoing humanitarian crisis as a “genocidal campaign” exacerbated by blockades and aid shutdowns.
Pakistan’s Envoy Criticizes Extremist Agenda of Israel
He criticized the extremist agenda of Israeli leaders, who he said are expanding the conflict and perpetuating the occupation to ensure political survival.
The Pakistani envoy pointed out that unchecked Israeli aggression threatens to ignite a wider war across the Middle East, emphasizing that the reasons for Israel’s sense of impunity are clear: it continues to receive unhindered arms supplies that fuel its military campaigns.

“Concrete actions must be taken to uphold the UN Charter and international legality, or we risk a collapse of the world order,” Ambassador Akram stated.
He stressed the need to break the humanitarian blockade of Gaza to allow essential supplies and medical aid into the region, while also calling for a political process aimed at achieving durable peace.
