Pakistan condoles the death of Namibia’s President

Islamabad, 4 February 2024 (TDI): Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan in a statement on Sunday expressed their condolences on the demise of President of Namibia, Hage G. Geingob.

Namibian Presidency reported that Dr. Hage G. Geingob, aged 82, the President of the Republic of Namibia passed on 4th February 2024 around 0004 hours at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment from his medical team. 

According to the reports from President Geingob’s office, it announced last month that the President had begun treatment following the discovery of cancerous cells during his routine treatment. 

The announcement did not provide any details of the President’s diagnosis, but it added that he would continue his Presidential duties. It was later communicated that he travelled to the United States for medical treatment and returned after two days on January 31st.

Statement from Foreign Office 

Following the news of his demise, the Foreign Office Pakistan offered their condolences and stated that, the Government and the people of Pakistan are deeply saddened at the passing of President Hage G. Geingob. 

In addition, it said that President Geingob was a visionary statesperson, a leading icon of the liberation struggle of Namibia and the chief architect of the country’s Constitution. 

Lastly, the statement included, President Geingob will always be remembered for his services to the Namibian nation and his distinguished legacy as the leader of the Global South. Our heartfelt condolences to President Geingob’s family and the people of Namibia. 

The President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, also expressed heartfelt condolences at the sad demise of President Geingob. Dr. Arif Alvi added that, his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Namibia and the family of the late President.

Following the death of President Geingob, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, former Vice President of Namibia, was appointed as the President of the Republic of Namibia, in accordance with Article 29 read together with Article 34 of the country’s Constitution.
