Islamabad, 26 April 2024 (TDI): Minister for Defense Khawaja Muhammad Asif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further deepen and expand collaboration with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
He was addressing the annual meeting of Defense Ministers of member states of the Organization in Astana, Kazakhstan, yesterday.
The meeting reviewed the regional security issues, including the defense cooperation initiatives, a news release said.
On the occasion, the defense minister expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Gaza.
He also said Pakistan has consistently advocated for a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian question as per the international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
He also said that Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the SCO platform. “The Minister for Defense said while addressing the forum, ‘I would reiterate that Pakistan takes great pride in our partnership with SCO and is fully committed to further deepening and expanding this association.’”
On the sidelines of the meeting, the defense minister held meetings with his counterparts from the friendly countries of the SCO to discuss bilateral defense cooperation.
Minister Asif emphasized the importance of collective efforts in ensuring stability and security within the SCO region.

He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and strengthening cooperation among SCO member countries.
Officials also deliberated upon various areas of mutual interest, including counter-terrorism, the Afghanistan situation, and the review of national security priorities, extremist threats, border management, and maritime security.
Pakistan’s engagement with SCO
Since joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in June 2017, Pakistan has actively participated and strategically collaborated across various fronts.
As a full member, Pakistan has consistently emphasized regional security cooperation, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts and border security initiatives.
The country has also leveraged SCO platforms to promote economic integration and trade facilitation, engaging in discussions on connectivity projects and trade routes that benefit member states.
Additionally, Pakistan has actively participated in cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts facilitated by the SCO, fostering greater understanding and cooperation among nations.
Notably, Pakistan assumed the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of Government in 2023, underscoring its increased role and responsibilities within the organization.
Through its engagement with the SCO, Pakistan aims to promote regional stability, enhance connectivity, and strengthen cooperation in Eurasia and beyond.
