Pakistan Canada Conclude Teacher Training Program

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan and Canada conclude the joint training program under the Debt for Education Conversion Plan.  Through this plan, Canada converts the debt Pakistan owes into spending on innovative and beneficial initiatives. 

In this latest program, 700000 teachers were trained from all across Pakistan; utilizing $132 million debt money on capacity building and long-term uplift in the education sector. 

The High Commission of Canada in Pakistan posted about the completion of this initiative on X saying: “This investment in teacher training is critical in improving the quality of education in Pakistan.” The post also read: “Together we’re building brighter futures.”

Education and development cooperation between Pakistan and Canada goes a long way. Both countries have a history of 60 years of development partnership. Through an intermediary organization, The Citizens Foundation, Canada has helped establish 2033 schools for underprivileged children in Pakistan. 

Canada specifically focuses on improving girls’ education and women’s rights in Pakistan through various initiatives.


During the flash floods of 2022, Canada committed $58 million for flood response, out of which $25 million were for reconstruction and rehabilitation. It helped rebuild a girls school in Upper Chitral which was affected by floods.

1n 2020, Pakistan was Canada’s 36th largest export destination and the total volume of bilateral trade was $1.11 billion. Canada’s exports to Pakistan was $669 million while Pakistan’s exports to Canada were worth $438 million. 

Canada also hosts 500000 Pakistanis, making it  the 54th largest diaspora from Asia. Pakistani students make a distinct group in the diaspora population and regular exchange programs also benefit students who are keen to study in Canada.
