Pakistan Calls for Reassessment of UNESCO’s Direction

-

Paris (TDI): Pakistan’s Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has emphasized the need to reassess the strategic direction of UNESCO in light of evolving global challenges.

Speaking at the 220th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board, he underscored the importance of ensuring the organization’s relevance in addressing current geopolitical tensions and global crises.

“This is an opportune moment to engage in open, transparent dialogue, ask the right questions, and work collaboratively to provide effective recommendations,” the ambassador said.

The meeting, he noted, is taking place against the backdrop of mounting global crises, including geopolitical tensions and conflicts that have placed the international rule of law under severe strain.

Ahmad highlighted that UNESCO has a unique opportunity to strengthen its cooperation with the broader United Nations system and other global forums.

The ambassador stressed that while UNESCO spends significant resources on smaller, limited-member groups, it must also engage with more inclusive platforms like the G-77, which has wider participation, especially from Africa and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Ahmad expressed concern over the organization’s handling of critical issues, pointing to a lack of transparency and unexplained delays in the release of key reports, such as the one on Gaza.

He criticized UNESCO for its silence on pressing matters, highlighting accusations of double standards.

He referred to a joint statement by UN Special Rapporteurs, marking one year of ongoing violence in Gaza, which described the devastating impact of Israeli airstrikes.

“Israeli bombs have spared no one — not journalists, students, doctors, or children. Educational, cultural, and heritage institutions have been destroyed, jeopardizing Palestinian identity and existence,” the ambassador said, stressing that UNESCO should be issuing such statements itself.

Envoy Calls for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire

In his remarks, Ambassador Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging the international community to prevent further escalation and to address the root cause of the conflict—Israel’s long-standing illegal occupation.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s consistent support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for a peaceful settlement in line with UN resolutions and international law.

Ambassador Ahmad also outlined Pakistan’s priorities at the session, which include the preservation of cultural heritage, promoting education, and countering disinformation and hate speech.

He noted the potential for UNESCO to make a significant difference in fields ranging from artificial intelligence ethics to upholding peace.

In conclusion, he emphasized that with a commitment to effective multilateralism and constructive dialogue, UNESCO can not only achieve its objectives but also enhance its credibility and role in the global arena.
