Pakistan Backs UN Resolution for DR Congo Peace

United Nations (TDI): Pakistan extended its support for the United Nations resolution on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, Alternate Permanent Representative to the UN, said that the resolution aligns with Pakistan’s stance on prioritizing negotiations, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He said that Pakistan welcomes and supports efforts led by the African Union (AU) and other sub-regional organizations in Africa to maintain peace in the DRC.

Addressing the current situation in Eastern DRC, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed highlighted the alarming humanitarian consequences of the ongoing situation, which have severely impacted the peace and stability in DRC.

“Pakistan expects and calls on all parties to cooperate and fully comply with the provisions of this resolution and their respective obligations in a genuine and timely manner”, he said while addressing the DRC conflict.

Furthermore, he called on all nations and organisations to cooperate fully to resolve the conflict and to fulfil their respective needs in a timely, orderly and genuine manner.

He stressed that there is no military solution to this conflict and urged the international community to prioritize diplomatic negotiations and actions to promote stability.

The envoy urged that the Council must continue to g the give ecessary attention to the situation, and in that context, the Security Council should also review the role and mandate of MONUSCO to better correspond to the situation on the ground.

Currently, a rebel group called M23 which is allegedly financed and supported by Rwanda has taken control of several cities, including Goma and Masisi in DRC.

Due to the ongoing violence, thousands of people are evacuating from these cities.

To counter the situation, the government is taking necessary steps to handle the situation in DRC.

The United Nations and other countries are calling for peace in the country.
