Pakistan Backs Iraq’s Democratic Progress Ahead of Nov Polls

United Nations (TDI): As Iraq prepares for its parliamentary elections on November 11 and the UN Mission winds down its operations by year’s end, Pakistan has expressed strong support for Baghdad’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and stabilize its security landscape amid continuing regional challenges.

At a briefing at the UN Security Council on the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad highlighted Iraq’s reforms, service delivery improvements, efficient budget implementation, and recently conducted provincial council elections, which he deemed as clear indications of stability and progress.

“These developments reflect positive momentum,” Ambassador Asim noted, while emphasizing the importance of a “smooth and well-supported transition” as UNAMI approaches its conclusion on December 31, 2025.

Established in 2003, UNAMI has played a vital role in promoting inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation. The Iraqi government formally requested its closure, citing significant progress in achieving its mandates.

Ambassador Asim urged Iraq’s political forces to maintain an inclusive dialogue and ensure preparations for the upcoming elections are broad-based and transparent.

He highlighted last year’s peaceful elections in the Kurdistan Region as a constructive milestone, although he acknowledged that the formation of a regional government remained pending.

Reiterating Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Ambassador Asim cautioned against the dangers posed by the wider regional security climate. “It is imperative that Iraq not be drawn into regional confrontations,” he said.

He also expressed Islamabad’s support for ongoing efforts to resolve outstanding issues between Iraq and Kuwait, particularly those concerning the return of Kuwaiti property and archives, and the repatriation of missing persons or their remains.

“Pakistan stands ready to contribute toward a peaceful and just resolution between the two brotherly nations,” the ambassador concluded.
