Pakistan Assumes UNSC Presidency for the Month of July

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan has assumed the presidency of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, starting today, which is being viewed as an important diplomatic endeavor. 

On this occasion, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar posted on X saying, “Pakistan takes on this responsibility with humility, conviction and profound commitment to the UN Charter, international law, and multilateralism.”

“Our presidency comes at a time of escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises across the world. We will strive to steer the Security Council towards responsive and effective action grounded in dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful dispute resolution,” he added. 

Back in January, Pakistan started its 8th term for two years (2025-2026) as a non-permanent member. UNSC has a total of 15 members out of which 5 are permanent members including the United States of America, China, UK, France and Russia.

The 10 non-permanent seats are allocated by geographical region and five are replaced every year. 

Earlier, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, called on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on June 25 in his capacity as the incoming President of the UN Security Council for the month of July 2025.

During the meeting, the Permanent Representative briefed the Secretary- General on the proposed Program of Work for the Council in July.

They held an in-depth exchange on a range of pressing peace and security issues on the Council’s agenda, including the evolving situation in the Middle East, developments across Africa, Europe, Asia and Latin America, and the important role of UN peacekeeping in promoting the Council’s objectives, according to UN Pakistan.

Apart from this, Pakistan was named as the vice-chair of UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee focused at overseeing implementation of resolution 1373 that concerns international anti-terror efforts. 

More recently, Ambassador Kamran Akhtar who is Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN has been elected as President of 53rd session of Industrial Development Board (UNIDO).
