Baku, 1 November 2023 (TDI): Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, received Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, General Syed Asim Munir in Baku, in a statement released by the Azerbaijanian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

It said Pakistan’s military chief called on the Azeri President to bolster military cooperation.

According to an Azerbaijanian news agency, the two sides shed light on shared interests, from defense cooperation to regional security, signifying an effort to fortify their alliances within the region.

Inter-Services Public Relations, Pakistan Army’s media affairs wing, is yet to share the development on the matter.

President Ilham Aliyev hailed the continuous support the government and people of Pakistan provided to Azerbaijan during Armenia’s aggression against the country.

Addressing General Asim Munir, Aliyev said that Pakistan’s gesture of not recognizing Armenia because of its aggression demonstrated Pakistan’s brotherly attitude towards the nation of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Islamabad had close relations, and their cooperation is evidence of how strong their alliance is becoming. High-level military talks and exchanges were held by both parties. Discussions on military training, experience sharing, and defense cooperation were frequently covered in these exchanges.

Azerbaijan and Pakistan signed defense agreements that aimed to foster military cooperation, information sharing, and joint exercises. These agreements may have included provisions for collaboration in areas such as defense industry, training, and equipment procurement.

Both sides expressed concerns about terrorism and extremism. Azerbaijan remains largest buyer of defense hardware from Pakistan, such as armored vehicles, small arms, and other military hardware. Additionally, both countries expressed interest in working together on counterterrorism initiatives, such as intelligence sharing and joint operations.
