Pakistan and Russia agree to enhance defense relations

Islamabad, 30 September 2021 (TDI): The Third Round of Russia-Pakistan Joint Military Consultative Committee (JMCC) was held at the Ministry of Defense. The Pakistani delegation was chaired by Defense Secretary of Pakistan, Retired Lieutenant General Mian Muhammad Hilal Hussain. While the Russian side was headed by the Deputy Defense Minister of Russia, Colonel-General Alexander V. Fomin.

During the meeting, the two defense officials reviewed the entire gambit of bilateral defense relations between Russia and Pakistan. Both sides pledged to further strengthen bilateral military cooperation including military training, joint exercises, intelligence sharing, and defense-industrial cooperation.

The emerging dynamics in Afghanistan also came under discussion.

General Fomin praised Pakistan-Russia defense cooperation. He added expansion of defense ties between the two countries is necessary for ensuring regional stability.

The Fourth Round of JMCC is agreed to held in Russia in 2022.

Reviewing previous defense relations, Pakistan and Russia signed the Defense Cooperation agreement in 2014. In 2018, Russia-Pakistan Joint Military Consultative Committee was established as the top bilateral forum on defense cooperation. The defense cooperation between the two countries has increased since the signing of these agreements.

Currently, Special Forces of Russia and Pakistan are participating in a two-week joint military exercise ‘Druzhba VI”. The military exercise is taking place at the Molkino training area in Krasnodar, Russia.
