Pakistan and China forge stronger ties for shared prosperity

Islamabad, 13 March 2024 (TDI): Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence that Pakistan and China will continue to uphold shared values and progress together toward shared development, prosperity, and cooperation.

Sharif, who recently assumed office, emphasized the importance of the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and China during an exclusive interview with Xinhua. He thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for his warm congratulations and continued support for Pakistan.

“This friendship, built over the past 70-plus years, is like no other,” Sharif remarked, highlighting the unique bond between the two countries, often described as “iron brothers.”

Speaking about Chinese modernization, Sharif praised China’s remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation. Additionally, he talked about education, healthcare, and economic growth.

Moreover, he emphasized the need for Pakistan to learn from the Chinese success model.  This was to address poverty, boost employment, and encourage entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, Sharif emphasized promoting small- to medium-sized business ventures in both urban and rural communities within the fields of information technology, industry, and agriculture.

Noting that Pakistan is one of the founding members of the Global Development Initiative’s (GDI) Group of Friends, Sharif declared that Pakistan is a staunch supporter of both the Global Security Initiative and the GDI. Such activities, in his opinion, will improve the relationships between international populations.

Strengthening Economic Cooperation

Sharif underscored the significance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a prominent project under the Belt and Road Initiative.

He outlined Pakistan’s plans to move into the second phase of CPEC. Sharif focused on technological development and agriculture.

In addition to this, Pakistan aims to establish industrial parks and export zones. It welcomes Chinese joint ventures in various sectors to create jobs and enhance exports.
