New York (TDI): During an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, requested by Pakistan, Somalia, and Algeria, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN urged the council to hold Israel accountable.
The emergency meeting was convened after Israel attacked residential area in Qatar’s capital on Tuesday, claiming its targets were Hamas officials.
Representative Asim Iftikhar argued that the attack violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar. He said that the strike, coming at a time when Gaza peace negotiations were ongoing, amounts to a deliberate effort to undermine diplomacy and prolong civilian suffering.

“It is evident that Israel, the occupying power is bent on doing everything to undermine and blow-up every possibility of peace. It also raises serious questions whether the return of hostages was indeed a priority,” he said.
Qatar, who has played the role of a mediator alongside Egypt and the United States, has been deeply angered by Israel’s attack.
Yes, the country serves as a political base for Hamas, and has hosted rounds of talks regarding the peace plans but a direct attack on its territory is largely being cited as unprovoked aggression.

The country has even hinted that it will stop playing the role of mediator, and has also urged a regional response to Israel’s actions.
Pakistan’s representative further said the attack on Doha is part of a broader sense of impunity which enables Israel to undermine regional peace whenever it wants.
He added, “The root cause of recurring crises and instability in the Middle East is Israel’s prolonged occupation of Arab lands and its persistent defiance of international law.”
Yesterday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister concluded a day-long visit to Qatar, which was undertaken to show support and solidarity with the Muslim-majority Gulf country.
