Islamabad (TDI): A six-member parliamentary delegation from Pakistan, led by Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, will participate in the Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York.

Scheduled for February 12–13, 2026, the Annual Parliamentary Hearing, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations, is designed as a platform for legislators, diplomats and global experts to discuss pressing world issues, including democratic governance, sustainable development, and strengthening multilateral cooperation.

According to an official handout, the Pakistani delegation will contribute to several thematic sessions, including

  • The UN at 80: Renewing trust and purpose through cooperation and partnership
  • Translating global commitments into national realities
  • Protecting democracy from within: Parliamentary safeguards, responsibilities and renewal in times of democratic erosion

Members of both houses of the parliament, including Senator Farooq H. Naek, Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, Senator Saleem Mandviwala and Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar of the National Assembly, are attending.

Senate Chairman Gilani is also scheduled to meet the President of the UN General Assembly and the President of the IPU, Dr. Tulia Ackson, on the sidelines of the event.

Pakistan has previously engaged in similar multilateral parliamentary fora, securing committee memberships at the IPU’s 150th Annual Assembly in Tashkent, and using international platforms to highlight issues such as terrorism, climate change, and regional security concerns.

In recent months, Islamabad has been vocal in multilateral settings, urging adherence to international law and continuous dialogue on regional flashpoints, including tensions arising from India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and other contentious moves.

The country has been consistent in its efforts to strengthen inter-parliamentary ties, such as the formal initiation of parliamentary relations with the United States earlier this year.

In November last year, Pakistan also hosted an Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference, which drew participation from over 40 countries.
