Pakistan Looks to Resume Dhaka Flights as High Commissioner Visits PIA

Karachi (TDI): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) said, on Sunday, that resumption of the airline’s flights to Dhaka came under discussion as the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain Khan, visited the PIA’s Head Office.

“Matters of mutual interests were discussed, including the resumption of PIA flights to Dhaka to re-establish the air link and strengthen the bond between the two nations.”

This development comes as relations between the two countries are warming up and flight resumption is on the cards for some time.

The easing of tensions between Pakistan and Bangladesh since last year’s overthrow of government in Bangladesh has led to a desire on both sides to ramp up trade and establish direct air link.

Last week, in New York, as both countries’ leaders took part in the annual UN General Assembly, a meeting on the sidelines also took place between the two.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, said that his country hopes for “constructive” and “forward-looking” ties with Bangladesh.

Historical strain between the two countries had been rooted in the war of 1971 which led to Bangladesh becoming a separate country.

Over the years, close relations between Bangladesh’s leadership with India further took the bilateral relation away from normalization.

Now, since the ouster of former Prime Minister Hasina Wajid, who was hostile to Pakistan, the country has opened up and shares the aspiration of cordial relations.

Days before HC Iqbal’s PIA visit, Bangladesh’s Home Secretary met the Chief Minister of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, and told him that a private shipping service between the two countries could not operate because of lack of federal endorsement.
