Pakistan Expresses Solidarity with Philippines, Indonesia Following Devastating Earthquakes

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan has extended condolences and solidarity to the people and governments of Indonesia and the Philippines following the tragic loss of life caused by recent earthquakes, that hit on Tuesday.

In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan expressed deep sorrow over the human and material losses suffered by both Southeast Asian countries.

The statement affirmed that Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the victims during this difficult time.

Tremors of 6.9 and 6.5 magnitude struck the Philippines and Indonesia respectively, on Tuesday. In the Philippines, over 70 people have been reported dead and the number is expected to rise as rescue work is ongoing.

The tremors have caused widespread destruction in parts of Indonesia and the Philippines; countries frequently prone to seismic activity due to their location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

The Philippines has been hit by back-to-back typhoons in recent weeks amidst a very heavy downpour and unusual wet season, likely propelled by climate change.

People in Indonesia were still under the shock of the Monday incident where the two-storey Islamic boarding school in the town of Sidoarjo collapsed with hundreds of students inside, when the earthquake jolts were felt.

The international community, including various humanitarian organizations, has started mobilizing resources to support rescue and relief operations in both countries.

The Southeast Asian region has been under severe strain for past few weeks, caused by returning storms and everyday life disrupted by rains and winds. This earthquake calamity has added to the existing agony as the Philippines especially mourns the losses.
