New York (TDI): On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan’s Prime Minister met the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, and said that his country hopes for constructive and forward-looking ties with Bangladesh.
Both leaders reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in diverse areas including trade, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and Permanent Representative at the UN, Asim Iftikhar.
PM Shehbaz stressed a relationship rooted in mutual respect, trust, and shared aspirations of regional peace and prosperity.
The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, appreciated Pakistan’s initiative to deepen engagement and highlighted the importance of enhancing bilateral trade and cultural linkages.
The Chief Advisor also called for reviving SAARC, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, which is now largely dormant because of the enduring rivalry between Pakistan and India.

On 17th April this year, both countries convened the Sixth Round of Foreign Secretary-Level Bilateral Consultations in Dhaka, after a hiatus of 15 years. But it is not fully established yet if such consultations will be regularly held.
Since the ouster of former Prime Minister Hasina Wajid, last year, in a popular revolt led by young Bangladeshis, strained ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh have returned to normalcy.
An active engagement and regular visits now define the bilateral relationship. Pakistan’s DPM/FM also visited Bangladesh on August 23-24, 2025.
