Pak-China Hold Arms Control Talks

ISLAMABAD (TDI): Pakistan and China held extensive discussions on Saturday, focusing on arms control, non-proliferation, global and regional security, and emerging technologies.

The talks also covered bilateral cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

The two sides engaged in these in-depth discussions during the 9th Round of Pakistan-China Bilateral Consultations on Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, held in Islamabad.

Senior officials from both countries participated in the talks.

Ambassador Tahir Andrabi, Director General (Arms Control & Disarmament Division), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and Sun Xiaobo, Director General (Department of Arms Control), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China headed their respective delegations.

Both delegations reviewed agendas and dynamics at key multilateral forums including the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, the Conference on Disarmament, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and other disarmament-related conventions and treaty bodies.

Following the consultations, Director General Sun Xiaobo met with Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch.

They highlighted the positive trajectory of Pakistan-China relations.

They  underscored the significance of ongoing dialogue on arms control and non-proliferation as a crucial component of the Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue.

The next round of bilateral consultations is scheduled to take place in Beijing next year.
