Pakistan, Azerbaijan Pledge to Deepen Parliamentary Ties

Islamabad (TDI): In a meeting with the Speaker of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan, Pakistan’s Chairman Senate, Yousaf Raza Gilani, said the country values its longstanding and brotherly relationship with Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijna’s Speaker landed in Pakistan to attend the Trilateral Speakers Summit among Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkiye.

Speaking to her in a separate meeting after the summit, Chairman Gilani said, “In a short span of time, Pakistan and Azerbaijan have developed a model relationship characterized by strong political will and frequent high-level engagements.”

The two dignitaries engaged in comprehensive discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, boosting parliamentary collaboration, increasing trade and investment, and advancing regional connectivity; according to an official statement release by the Chairman’s office.

The statement also said that Gilani expressed optimism regarding the upcoming visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Pakistan, and noted the visit would further cement the foundation of “this close partnership.”

Highlighting the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy, the Chairman pointed to the strengthening of ties between the legislatures of both countries.

He fondly recalled his participation in the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) meeting held in Baku in February 2025, describing it as a milestone in fostering parliamentary cooperation.

He also welcomed the ongoing interaction between the parliamentary friendship groups of Pakistan and Azerbaijan, calling it a key driver for promoting people-to-people contacts.

On economic matters, the Chairman said that while trade between the two countries has grown, there remains significant untapped potential. “Azerbaijan is an important investment partner for Pakistan,” he noted.

In her remarks, Speaker Gafarova thanked the Chairman for the warm hospitality and reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation through consistent and high-level engagement.
