Pakistan, Armenia Formally Establish Diplomatic Ties

Tianjin (TDI): On the sidelines of the ongoing SCO Summit in China, the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Pakistan exchanged a joint communique, on Sunday, formally initiating diplomatic relations between the two.

This means that Pakistan now recognizes Armenia and that both countries will now have diplomatic presence in each other’s country.

In the last week, both Foreign Ministers spoke on a phone call and official statements from both sides hinted such a possibility.

Last month, as Azerbaijan and Armenia formalized a peace deal brokered by Washington, Pakistan welcomed this move.

Over the years, Pakistan had supported Azerbaijan’s claim over the formerly contested Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is now under Azerbaijan’s control while Armenia has given up its claim.

This convened a desire in both countries to declare peace and formally end all reservations around the conflict, which had persisted since 1990s.

Pakistan and Azerbaijan, being very close partners, have always supported each other’s territorial claims. This kept Pakistan away from recognizing Armenia. After the August peace deal, there was less reason left to not have formal relations with Armenia.

“The two leaders reaffirmed their desire to work closely with each other at bilateral and multilateral fora, to achieve their shared objectives of peace, progress, and prosperity for the peoples of their two countries,” a statement by the Foreign Office of Pakistan read.

Commenting on the development, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan wrote on X: “By this major step, our Governments express their desire to develop mutually beneficial cooperation in line w/the UN Charter.”

While an official word from Azerbaijan has not surfaced yet, the Prime Minister Ilham Aliyev met his counterpart from Pakistan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Pakistan has largely been welcomed and appears to fit naturally in the course of events.
