Damascus (TDI): In a stunning development, Syrian opposition fighters have seized the presidential palace in Damascus, marking the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s 53-year family rule.
The rapid offensive by the group, known as the “Operations Room to Conquer Damascus”, culminated in the capture of the capital, sending jubilant crowds into the streets.
State television aired a video statement on Sunday, featuring opposition members declaring the overthrow of al-Assad and announcing the release of all prisoners.
In the broadcast, a representative of the opposition called on fighters and citizens to safeguard the institutions of what they described as “the free Syrian state.”

The opposition stated that al-Assad has fled the capital, though his current location remains undisclosed.
Syria’s civil war began in 2011 as a peaceful uprising against al-Assad’s rule but escalated into a protracted and devastating conflict involving regional and international powers.
