Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi tweeted about attending the opening ceremony of the 55th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM).

All the member states of ASEAN attend the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting. The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss political and security cooperation throughout Southeast Asia.

The diplomats from ASEAN member states discuss several issues in this regard at the meeting.

Opening ceremony of AMM under Chairmanship of Cambodia

The opening ceremony of the four-day summit commenced with the opening remarks of the Foreign Minister of Cambodia, Prak Sokhonn. Minister Sokhonn shed light on different issues at hand.

These topics include the development of the ASEAN Community, how to effectively combat the Covid-19 epidemic, and collaboration and partnerships with external parties.

The meeting covers different regional and global matters. These include the urgent security challenges that, if not addressed effectively, will undermine regional peace and stability.

During the ceremony, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen also presented an overview of ASEAN’s 55-year history.

Hun Sen highlighted the disastrous impact of COVID-19 on the region along with joint attempts for economic recovery. He also mentioned the formation of micro alliances, escalating weapons competition, and the selective enforcement of economic sanctions.

Additionally, Hun Sen discussed the political, economic, security, and humanitarian challenges in Myanmar. He also shed light on the armed conflicts in Ukraine.

The theme of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

The theme for this year’s ASEAN summit is “ASEAN A.C.T: Addressing Challenges Together”. The motto calls for the ASEAN coalition to prove its commitment to overcoming obstacles as a group.

This can be done with a focus on accelerating post-pandemic recovery, implementing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and finalizing the East Sea Code of Conduct (COC) that is consistent with international law, UNCLOS.
