SEOUL, 26 August 2024 (TDI): North Korea has unveiled a new “suicide drone” with leader Kim Jong Un personally supervising its performance test, according to state media reports on Monday.
These explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are designed to crash into enemy targets, functioning as guided missiles. During the test, the drones successfully identified and destroyed targets by following pre-set routes.
Kim Jong Un, observing the test through high-powered binoculars, emphasized the need for North Korea to ramp up production of these drones. The country’s expanding drone fleet, which includes strategic reconnaissance and multi-purpose attack drones, is intended to target both ground and maritime objectives. Kim also announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence technology into the development of these drones.
Experts have noted that the drones showcased by North Korea resemble existing models such as the Israeli-made HAROP, the Russian Lancet-3, and the Israeli HERO 30. This resemblance has led to speculation that North Korea might have obtained these technologies from Russia, potentially through Iran, which is suspected of accessing them through hacking or theft from Israel.
The introduction of these drones poses a significant threat to South Korea’s national security. Experts warn that, in the event of a provocation or international conflict, South Korea’s military could face substantial damage from these advanced drones. This concern is heightened by a 2022 incident in which North Korean drones infiltrated South Korean airspace, bypassing the country’s defenses.
In response to these escalating threats, South Korea established a drone operation command in 2023 to better address the challenges posed by North Korea’s advancing drone capabilities. This development comes amid strengthening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow, with both nations reinforcing their alliance following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of supplying ammunition and missiles to Russia for its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The unveiling of these drones underscores the rising military tension in the region and raises concerns about potential global security implications.
