No US Role in Sinwar Killing: Pentagon

-

Washington (TDI): The Pentagon has confirmed that its forces played no direct role in the Israeli operation that killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, although U.S. intelligence support may have contributed to Israel’s understanding of Hamas leadership.

This clarification comes after speculation regarding potential U.S. involvement in the high-profile mission in Gaza.

Speaking at a press briefing, Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, emphasized that the operation, which resulted in the death of Sinwar, was solely conducted by Israeli forces.

“This was an Israeli operation. There (were) no U.S. forces directly involved,” Ryder stated.

However, Ryder acknowledged the U.S. had been providing intelligence to Israel, particularly in relation to the recovery of hostages and the tracking of Hamas leaders, including those responsible for the October 7, 2023, attacks that triggered the Gaza conflict, according to media reports.

“The United States has helped contribute information and intelligence as it relates to hostage recovery and the tracking and locating of Hamas leaders who have been responsible for holding hostages,” Ryder noted.

He underscored that this intelligence assistance was part of a broader support system in which the U.S. has been aiding Israel in its efforts to understand the leadership structure of Hamas.

This includes tracking the whereabouts of key figures who have played pivotal roles in recent hostilities.

Limits of US Role

“But again, this was an Israeli operation. And I would refer you to them to talk about the details of how the operation went down,” Ryder added, reiterating that while U.S. intelligence had contributed to the overall picture, it had no direct involvement in the execution of the mission.

The operation, which occurred in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Yahya Sinwar, considered one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attack, was a key figure in Hamas, responsible for orchestrating many of the group’s operations in Gaza.

While U.S. officials continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself, this clarification distances the Pentagon from any direct military role in Sinwar’s killing, reflecting the cautious stance the U.S. is maintaining as the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate.
