No Desire for Trade War, But Not Afraid: China

Beijing (TDI): Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday that China has no desire to engage in tariff or trade wars.

In response to a question noting that the White House has confirmed many Chinese exports to the United States now face cumulative tariffs of up to 145%, and whether China will again raise tariffs on US imports, the spokesperson said that China has repeatedly stated its solemn position on the issue.

“Tariff and trade wars have no winners. Beijing does not want to fight these wars but is not scared of them,” Lin said.

“If the United States truly wants to resolve issues through negotiations, it must stop applying extreme pressure and acting recklessly. These tactics do not work on China. Any talks must be based on equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity. If the US insists on continuing a tariff and trade war, Beijing’s response will continue to the end.”

Li said that China is a responsible country, adding, “Our countermeasures against US bullying are not only about protecting China’s legitimate rights and interests, but also about defending international rules and order, safeguarding the shared interests of all nations as well as global fairness and justice.”
