US House Speaker visits ROK

Seoul, 5 August 2022 (TDI): The President of the Republic of Korea/South Korea (ROK) Yoon Suk Yeol had a phone call conversation with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and US congressional delegation during their visit to ROK.

The main aim of the collaboration was to reaffirm the strong commitment to work together to strengthen the ROK-US global alliance.

Pelosi is on an Asian trip and visited Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea with a six-member delegation.

Yoon, Pelosi phone call Conversation

President Yoon is on vacation and was not able to visit Pelosi and back to work. The presidential office also made it clear that there would be no meeting between President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi.

The presidential office announced on Thursday morning that President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi will speak on the phone. The office stated that it was a decision made with full consideration of the national interests of both states.

The phone contact between President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi was unscheduled but can be viewed in terms of diplomatic courtesy.

According to a statement from Yoon’s office, the ROK President and Pelosi discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship and working together on regional security problems such as North Korea’s nuclear challenges.

Pelosi stated that the delegation was pleased to speak over the phone with President Yoon. She stated, “on the call, we thanked the President for Korea’s hospitality of 28,000 US service members and their families.”

Each member of the US delegation spoke with the President and discussed potential areas for future collaboration to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific.

US and ROK reaffirmed their Strong Relations

Pelosi said, “the United States and South Korea share a strong bond formed for security and forged by decades of warm friendship.”

“Our Congressional delegation traveled to Seoul to reaffirm our treasured ties and our shared commitment to advancing security and stability, economic growth, and democratic governance.”

The US House Speaker praised the US and ROK forces during a trip to the Demilitarized Zone along the inter-Korean border.

Pelosi said, “We conveyed the gratitude of the Congress and the country for the patriotic service of our service members, who stand as sentinels of democracy on the Korean Peninsula.

Our members also greeted members of the Korean Honor Guard, whose devoted service is crucial to defending the Korean people.”

Pelosi will travel to Japan after having a meeting with her ROK partner, Kim Jin-Pyo, and visiting the Joint Security Area (JSA).
