Tokyo, 3 August 2021 (TDI): Moroccon athlete Soufiane El Bakkali made history by winning the first-ever gold medal in men’s Olympic 3000 meters steeplechase and broke Kenya’s 37-year dominance. Until now, no one from Morocco had ever won the Olympic 3000m steeplechase gold. 25 years old, El Bakkali has become the first non-Kenyan athlete to win the gold medal with a time of 8:08.90. Whereas Ethiopian’s Lamecha Girma won silver, finished in a time of 8:10.38, and Benjamin Kigen of Kenya claimed bronze in 8:11.45
