MOFA Pakistan felicitates Maldives on its National Day

Islamabad, 7 October 2021 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan extended its felicitations to the Republic of Maldives on its National Day. National Day of Maldives also known as Qaumee Dhuvas, in the local Dhivehi language.

The National Day of Maldives is celebrated to mark the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu.

The date of Maldives National Day is based on the Islamic calendar, which is a lunar calendar. However it falls every year on the first day of the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal (third month in the Islamic calendar). Hence, this year the National Day occurs on October 7.

The Portuguese arrived in 1558, killed the local sultan, and occupied Maldives. Muhammad Thakurufaanu arrived in the capital Male ‘along with his companions. Thakurufaanu took back Maldives from the Portuguese occupation in 1573, ending 15 years of colonial rule.
