Mexico Sends Over 800 Tons of Humanitarian Aid to Cuba

Havana (TDI): Mexico has dispatched more than 800 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba, marking one of its largest organized relief efforts toward the island in recent years.

Two vessels of the Mexican Navy, Papaloapan and Isla Holbox, sailed from Veracruz on Sunday carrying essential supplies such as food, powdered milk and hygiene products, according to official government statements and international reporting.

The aid shipment, totaling over 814 tons, has been sent under the direction of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and is expected to reach Cuban ports within about four days of departure.

Papaloapan is transporting roughly 536 tons of basic food items, along with hygiene essentials, while Isla Holbox is carrying over 277 tons of powdered milk to support nutrition needs on the island.

The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs framed the effort as part of the country’s long-standing tradition of humanitarian cooperation with Latin American nations, stressing that the government is committed to aiding “peoples who face emergency and vulnerability.”

Officials noted that additional shipments of more than **1 500 tons of powdered milk and beans are also planned for subsequent departure in the coming days.

Cuba has faced acute shortages of food and fuel amid a prolonged economic crisis and restrictive US sanctions, prompting urgent calls for external support. Mexican aid arrives as leaders in Havana seek relief for everyday citizens, even as diplomatic tensions simmer between Mexico and the United States.

President Sheinbaum’s administration has emphasized that the aid is strictly humanitarian, aimed at alleviating civilian hardship rather than engaging in geopolitical conflict.

The Cuban government has acknowledged the assistance, with officials noting the symbolic and practical importance of such support from a neighboring country with historical ties and shared cultural bonds.

Since the capture of Venezuelan President by the United States special forces, President Trump has been threatening Cuba with blocking all its oil supplies. The United Nations has warned any such action would trigger a humanitarian catastrophe in the country.
