Havana, 10 May 2022 (TDI): The Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, concluded his tour of Central America and the Caribbean in Cuba.
The Mexican President aimed to address continental issues such as illegal migration. Furthermore, the President intended to promote his vision for regional economic development.
He visited Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, and Cuba.
He met his counterparts from these countries to discuss regional issues. In addition, he signed bilateral cooperation agreements with these countries and fostered steps towards closer regional integration.
The five-day tour began on Thursday in Guatemala. The President of Mexico criticized the US for its slow-paced actions in providing development aid to Central America.
Moreover, he demanded US aid to stem the poverty and unemployment that causes thousands of Guatemalans to migrate to the US.
Additionally, the Mexican leader expressed anger at the US rejection of his calls to expand his tree-planting program to Central America.
Finally, he called on the US to play its part in dealing with the causes of large-scale illegal immigration. Thousands of Central American migrants travel to the US border through Mexico.
Visit to Cuba
The Mexican President concluded his tour on Monday by paying a visit to Cuba. The Mexican President called for ending the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba.
He proclaimed, “We are finishing our trip across Central America and the Caribbean in Cuba. We confirm our commitment to continue searching for alternatives to lift the trade, economic, and financial embargo imposed on the island by the United States”.
He further said, “It is time for brotherhood and the beginning of a new stage among all the countries of the Americas”. Moreover, the President called on the inclusion of Cuba and all American countries in the upcoming Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.
Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua were not invited to the Summit. Furthermore, during a joint press conference with his Cuban counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador laid down his vision for the Americas.
His proposed “New Co-existence” scheme will challenge the “for or against the US” principle for the Americas.
