Meeting between Presidents of Spain and Cyprus

Madrid, 10 December 2021 (TDI): President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, held the meeting at the Palacio de la Moncloa, on the 9th of December 2021.

Aim of the meeting

The aim of meeting to visit Madrid following an invitation by His Majesty King Felipe VI was to discuss bilateral ties. The two Presidents recapitulated the magnificent relations shared between Spain and Cyprus during the meeting. Moreover, they discussed the major issues on the European agenda and global challenges.


The two leaders highlighted the COVID-19 pandemic situation and stressed that how important it is to share knowledge, expertise, and technology.

They also guaranteed their dedication to the EU recovery and resilience funds to boost the economies of their countries and COVID-19 fallout recovery. The two Presidents spoke of their great satisfaction with the signing on this occasion of three Memoranda of Understanding.

They also signed MoU in health, political consultations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and cooperation between the Spanish Diplomatic School and the Cypriot Diplomatic Academy.

They also shared their enthusiasm for improving and deepening relations in commerce, innovation, tourism, culture, and education.

The leaders reiterated that a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Mediterranean is a strategic priority for the EU and expressed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.

They also stressed the importance of respect for the sovereign rights of each state in its maritime zones under international law, including international maritime law.

Settlement of the Cyprus issue

Lastly, they asserted their support for the settlement of the Cyprus issue, which through bi-communal, bizonal federation with political equality and in line with the EU acquis.

They also focused on Varosha’s concern and all UNSC resolutions and statements should be respected and implemented in order what will help to achieve a comprehensive and viable political settlement.

This will also help Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, but will also significantly contribute to peace and stability in the broader region.
