Tbilisi, 18 July 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov met with the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili in Georgia.

In line with the framework of his working visit to Georgia, Minister Bayramov expressed gratitude and conveyed greetings to Prime Minister Garibashvili on behalf of both the President and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan during their meeting.

Bayramov highlighted the relations between the two countries. Specifically that the existing traditional friendship, good neighborliness, and strategic partnership relations between both countries are built on a solid foundation.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister stressed that the high-level political dialogue between both countries and intensive reciprocal visits promoted the further development of relations.

In accordance, the Prime Minister of Georgia likewise conveyed his greetings to Azerbaijan’s President and Prime Minister. He also expressed his satisfaction with the dynamic development of bilateral relations.

Thereupon, the Foreign Minister and Prime Minister exchanged views regarding the prospects for the development of cooperation. Particularly in economic, trade, energy, transport, and humanitarian areas.

Most importantly, Minister Bayramov appreciated the Georgian side for hosting the meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Regarding the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the post-conflict phase, Garibashvili emphasized that they accept the efforts to achieve peace. Also that Georgia supports this process.

Garibashvili highlighted the importance of the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, which they hosted in this regard. Above all, both parties discussed other issues of mutual interest.

Areas of cooperation

As Azerbaijan is a strategic partner of Georgia, they both enjoy close relations. The dynamics of bilateral visits remain active both on legislative and executive levels.

Notably, the existing legal framework between Georgia and Azerbaijan covers more than 100 bilateral. Along with multilateral agreements and thus regulates almost all areas of cooperation.

The free trade regime that exists between Georgia and Azerbaijan is legally regulated in both bilateral and multilateral (within GUAM) formats.

For the past years, Azerbaijan has remained part of the main trade and economic partners of Georgia. In line with this, Azerbaijani companies have made large investments in Georgia.

In addition, energy represents one of the significant directions of cooperation and is expressed in important projects. For instance, the oil pipelines of “Baku-Supsa” and “Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan”. As well as the “Baku–Tbilisi–Erzurum” gas pipeline and high-voltage power line of Gardabani – Samukh.

Active interaction additionally encompasses the frames of the southern energy corridor together with the “Baku–Tbilisi–Kars” railway projects.

Noteworthy, the trilateral format of Azerbaijan–Georgia–Turkey initiated in 2012 by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs (“Trabzon Declaration”) has been a significant political mechanism.

The trilateral mechanism, therefore, covers cooperation at the presidential level, between the parliamentary committees on foreign relations and defense ministers. All in all, the practice of conducting trilateral business forums also exists.
