Dublin, 9 August 2024 (TDI): After the seizure of bitcoin valued at €6.5 million (£5.6 million) in Dublin, an accused was presented in the court.

Seizures related to money laundering and the sale of banned content on dark net marketplaces were the focus of the police investigation.

There are three charges of money laundering against the 23-year-old man.

Another 49-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman who were taken into custody as part of the police inquiry have been released from prison.

Watches valued at €120,000 and two cars valued at €220,000 were among the “substantial assets” seized as part of the inquiry, according to the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB).

The suspect who appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice on Thursday was Kevin Daniel Andrei, who resides at Drynam Avenue in Swords, County Dublin.

Andrei was warned and taken into custody at the Kevin Street Garda station, and he had not responded to the accusations, according to GNCCB Det Garda Ciaran Byrne, who testified in the court.

The three money laundering allegations relate to his awareness that 42 different Binance transactions totaling more over €34,000 between March 2021 and September 2022 were the profits of illicit activities, but he nevertheless covered up and disguised their nature and source.

Over 1,800 Revolut transactions totaling over €227,000 were concealed between February 2021 and June 2024, knowing they were the proceeds of illicit activities. Another charge concerns more than €22,000 worth of Wirex transactions.

On October 3, Andrei has been asked to return to court. He was released on bail.
