Singapore, 16 May 2024 (TDI): Lawrence Wong was officially sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Singapore on Wednesday, marking the first leadership transition in two decades.
Wong, the 51-year-old economist turned politician, succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, 72, who stepped down after 20 years of service.
Wong becomes only the fourth Prime Minister since Singapore’s independence, highlighting a significant milestone in the nation’s political landscape.
Wong is a prominent member of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), which has been at the helm of Singapore’s economic progress. His appointment as Prime Minister signifies the PAP’s commitment to continuity and stability, while also embracing a new generation of leadership.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Wong expressed his gratitude and vision for the future. “I’m honored to be sworn in as the 4th Prime Minister of Singapore.”
“Join me & my team in our journey forward. Everyone will have a stake in our nation’s progress & play a key role in shaping our future. Let us unite with a common purpose & shared resolve. Let us take SG Forward – Together,” he said.
Wong began his rise to leadership in April 2022 when the PAP named him the leader of the fourth-generation, or 4G, team and in June of that year, he promoted to Deputy Prime Minister of the country.
