‘Fresh Momentum’ in Ties as Kyrgyz President Arrives in Pakistan on Maiden Visit

Islamabad (TDI): The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Nurgozhoevich Zhaparov, is set to arrive in Pakistan today, marking the first visit by a Kyrgyz head of state since 2005. The visit is expected to give “fresh momentum” to bilateral ties.

President Zhaparov will be accompanied by a delegation of cabinet ministers, business leaders, and other officials. The complete spectrum of bilateral relations is expected to be reviewed as the President meets his counterpart and the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Another delegation from Kyrgyzstan already arrived in Pakistan on Monday to finalize arrangements for the high-level visit. The Kyrgyz President is scheduled to have meetings with Pakistan’s political and military leadership.

“The two sides will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explore new avenues to further deepen cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, energy, defence, education, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity,” a statement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

“The visit reflects the brotherly ties between Pakistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, rooted in shared history, faith, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity in Central and South Asia. It is expected to impart fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation and reinforce collaboration at regional and multilateral forums,” it further said.

During the visit, the two countries are expected to sign several agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs). A joint press briefing by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Japarov is also anticipated.

Preparations for the visit were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting at the Parliament House between the Convener of the Pakistan–Kyrgyzstan Parliamentary Friendship Group (PFG), Rana Iradat Sharif Khan, and the Kyrgyz Ambassador to Pakistan, Kylychbek Sultan.

Pakistani delegates noted the number of Pakistani students studying in Kyrgyz institutions and the Kyrgyz side expressed interest in inviting Kyrgyz students to study in Pakistan, opening the door to deeper people-to-people exchanges.

Central to the visit’s agenda are plans to boost bilateral cooperation in trade, enhance connectivity, and strengthen parliamentary ties. With a newly reconstituted Kyrgyz parliament, the visit is expected to pave the way for renewed inter-parliamentary collaboration.
