Kosovo celebrates its 17th Independence Day

On the 17th of February, the Republic of Kosovo proudly celebrates its 17th Independence Day, celebrating its rich history, diverse culture, economic progress, and aspirations for a bright future.

This day marks a defining moment in Kosovo’s journey toward sovereignty. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, becoming the newest independent nation in Europe.

History

Historically, the region has been a crossroads of civilizations, influenced by the Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. The Battle of Kosovo in 1389 was pivotal in Balkan history, shaping the region’s identity for centuries.

After World War II, Kosovo became an autonomous province within the former Yugoslavia. The Kosovo War (1998-1999) and subsequent NATO intervention placed Kosovo under UN administration until it formally declared independence in 2008.

Today, over 100 countries recognize Kosovo as a sovereign state, and its people continue to work toward full international recognition and integration into global institutions.

A Land of Stunning Landscapes and Natural Beauty

Kosovo is a small country with beautiful landscapes. The snow-capped peaks of the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna) and the rolling hills of the Sharr Mountains. The country has amazing national parks, cliffs, hiking trails, and waterfalls. Kosovo also features the Drini River, clear lakes, and fertile plains, making it a great place for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Culture and Food

Kosovo’s culture is a vibrant blend of Albanian, Serbian, Turkish, Bosniak, and Roma influences. The capital, Pristina, is a lively hub of art, music, and literature. The Ethnological Museum and the National Library of Kosovo showcase the country’s deep-rooted traditions and intellectual heritage.

Music and dance play a significant role in Kosovo’s cultural identity. Traditional Albanian folk music, featuring instruments like the çifteli and lahuta, continues to thrive. The annual Dokufest film festival in Prizren attracts filmmakers from around the world, highlighting Kosovo’s emerging role in global cinema.

Kosovar cuisine is a delightful mix of Mediterranean, Ottoman, and Balkan influences. Some of the country’s most beloved dishes include lfija, pite, tavë kosi, sarma, and baklava.

A Rich Heritage of Historical and Religious Sites

Kosovo has important sites that are recognized by UNESCO, including the Visoki Dečani Monastery. This monastery was built in the 14th century and is famous for its beautiful medieval frescoes. Many landmarks in Kosovo date back to the Ottoman era including well-preserved old towns, mosques, Orthodox churches, and stone bridges.

A Growing Economy

Since gaining independence, Kosovo has made significant economic progress, transitioning into a market-based economy with a growing services, manufacturing, and IT sector. The country is rich in natural resources, including lignite, lead, zinc, and silver, which contribute to its industrial base.

Pakistan extended their independence on the occasion of the Independence of Kosovo half of the people and the government.

On December 24, 2012, Pakistan officially recognized Kosovo as an independent state, becoming the 98th country to do so. At the same time, Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkey in Ankara was also accredited to Kosovo.

The last meeting between the leaders of Kosovo and Pakistan took place in October 2013 in London. During this meeting, Kosovan President Atifete Jahjaga and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif discussed ways to enhance economic trade between the both countries.

Furthermore, both leaders were invited to visit each other’s countries for state visits, and they accepted the invitations.

The US Secretary of State also extended congratulations on behalf of the United States and highlighted the desire to collaborate across multiple sectors to boost the economy.
