Astana, 3 September 2024 (TDI): Kazakhstan’s population has reached to 20,182,000 as of August 1, 2024, marking an increase of 148,200 people, or 0.74%, from January to July 2024, according to the National Statistics Bureau.

Astana has experienced the highest growth rate, expanding by 3.59% during this period, largely due to high natural growth and significant internal migration.
The city’s population now stands at 1.48 million. In contrast, Shymkent and Almaty saw slower growth rates.

Apart from the three major cities, notable population increases were observed in the Mangistau and Almaty regions, with growth occurring in 13 of Kazakhstan’s 20 regions.

Population Declines

However, the North Kazakhstan, Kostanay, Pavlodar, East Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Abay, and Zhetysu regions experienced population declines.

The largest decrease was in North Kazakhstan, down by 0.89%, followed by Abay with a 0.35% reduction. The North Kazakhstan region is facing a natural population decline, with mortality rates surpassing birth rates.
