Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan Establish Syr Darya Stations

Nur-Sultan, (TDI): Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have reached an agreement to install ten automated measuring stations along the Syr Darya River to enhance water resource management.

This initiative was confirmed by the press service of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Water Management and Irrigation following a meeting between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Management, Shavkat Hamroyev, and his Kazakh counterpart, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.

The ministers discussed the automation of measuring stations and the digitization of water accounting for the Syr Darya, emphasizing ongoing negotiations with international financial organizations for the project’s implementation.

Nurzhigitov noted the importance of preparing operational modes for the Norin-Syr Darya cascade reservoirs in anticipation of the upcoming pre-irrigation season.

Both ministers expressed gratitude for each other’s active participation in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFSA) meeting and recognized the positive outcomes of their collaborative efforts over the past year.

Nurzhigitov stated, “We intend to continue close bilateral cooperation. We have common views on many issues, allowing us to resolve existing challenges on a mutually beneficial basis.”

Strengthening Cooperation

Hamroyev reiterated Uzbekistan’s commitment to strengthen cooperation within the IFSA, expressing support for Kazakhstan’s chairmanship and highlighting the need for joint projects.

These include efforts to preserve the ecosystems of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya basins, ensure quality drinking water for residents, and restore local water bodies.

Additionally, the ministers discussed the development of a regional strategy for water resource utilization. Earlier in May, Hamroyev had indicated favorable forecasts for the watersheds of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers for the year.
