Kazakhstan Unveils Central Asia’s Most Powerful Supercomputer

Astana (TDI): Kazakhstan has taken a major leap in digital advancement with the launch of Central Asia’s most powerful supercomputer, a move hailed by officials as a vital step toward achieving technological self-reliance.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev inaugurated the new high-performance computing system at a data center run by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry, according to a statement from the presidential office.

Built using NVIDIA’s H200 graphic processors, the computing cluster boasts processing speeds of up to 2 exaflops or two quintillion calculations per second, making it the region’s most advanced system of its kind.

Tokayev described the development as a catalyst for digital transformation across Kazakhstan’s economy, saying the technology would benefit research institutions, startups, and public and private enterprises alike.

“This infrastructure will fast-track the integration of artificial intelligence, reduce our dependence on external IT platforms, and strengthen Kazakhstan’s technological independence,” said Digital Development Minister Zhaslan Madiev.

Madiev noted that a large number of Kazakh businesses, particularly fintech firms and AI startups, currently depend on foreign cloud services such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, resulting in capital flight and data security concerns.

With this new system, those firms will have access to domestic computing power. Local engineers have undergone training to operate the system, and full control is expected to transition to Kazakhstani specialists within five years.
