Kazakhstan Celebrates Constitution Day

-

Astana, 30 August 2024 (TDI): Kazakhstan marks Constitution Day on August 30, celebrating the adoption of its fundamental law in 1995 through a national referendum.

This pivotal document replaced the 1993 Constitution and established a strong presidential system with significant executive powers, enhancing the country’s sovereignty and legal framework.

In a congratulatory message, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev praised the Constitution as the bedrock of Kazakhstan’s statehood and a guarantor of the nation’s progress and stability.

He emphasized that the Constitution prioritizes citizens’ rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, assembly, and religion, and that all national transformations aim to improve the welfare of the people.

The Constitution enshrines key principles such as sovereignty, democracy, and the rule of law. It has been amended four times to adapt to the nation’s evolving needs: in 1998, 2007, 2011, and most recently in 2022.

Amendments in Constitution

The latest amendments introduced principles that promote greater citizen participation in governance and democratization of political processes.

They also limited presidential powers to a single seven-year term and facilitated the formation of new political parties. Additionally, the re-establishment of the Constitutional Court in 2022 reinforced the supremacy of the Constitution.

“The Constitution has fortified its role in maintaining law and order, which is essential for a just and harmonious society,” Tokayev noted, highlighting the importance of recent constitutional reforms.
