Kazakh Investment in Kyrgyzstan Hits Record $113.5M in 2024

Bishkek (TDI): In a sign of growing economic collaboration, Kazakhstan’s investments in Kyrgyzstan soared to unprecedented levels in 2024, reaching $113.5 million.

According to Kyrgyzstan’s National Investment Agency, this figure marks a record for direct investment from Kazakhstan and is part of over $1 billion in total foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country for the year.

Compared to the $33.6 million recorded in 2020, the surge underscores increased investor confidence in Kyrgyzstan’s economy and a strengthening bond between the two neighboring nations.

Kazakh capital has been directed into a range of key sectors including manufacturing, raw material processing, transportation, agriculture, trade, and services.

These investments are playing a significant role in upgrading infrastructure, generating employment opportunities, transferring industrial know-how, and enhancing Kyrgyzstan’s export capacity.

The momentum has continued into 2025, with Kazakhstan contributing close to $50 million in FDI during just the first quarter alone, keeping it among Kyrgyzstan’s top sources of foreign investment.

In terms of trade, Kazakhstan remains one of Kyrgyzstan’s key partners, with bilateral trade volume reaching $1.7 billion in 2024. Leaders from both countries have expressed ambitions to grow this figure substantially.

On August 2, officials from both sides met in Cholpon-Ata. Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev reaffirmed their commitment to expanding economic ties, setting a target of $3 billion in annual bilateral trade.

One of the most significant developments on the horizon is the planned creation of a major Industrial Trade and Logistics Complex near the shared border. Slated to open in 2026, this facility, positioned between the Karasu and Ak-Tilek checkpoints, is set to become one of Central Asia’s largest hubs for freight consolidation, goods processing, and regional transit.
