Tokyo, 10 July 2023(TDI): Minister Hayashi expressed his support for establishing a global coalition led by the United States to address the growing threat of synthetic drugs.

HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a powerful video message at the online ministerial meeting hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on July 7, 2023

Minister Hayashi highlighted his deep concern regarding the significant risks synthetic drugs pose to public health and global security.

Acknowledging the rapidly evolving landscape of the world drug problem, he emphasized the need for proactive measures and a multi-faceted strategy to tackle both drug supply and demand reduction.

One key point Minister Hayashi stressed was the importance of fostering cooperation among various stakeholders. He advocated for collaboration not only between law enforcement agencies such as the police, customs, and coast guard but also with narcotics control agencies and research communities.

 

This integrated approach would bolster the surveillance capabilities of law enforcement agencies and enable them to respond swiftly to the challenges posed by synthetic drugs.

Minister Hayashi concluded his message by underscoring the critical need for concrete action and practical collaboration. Recognizing the urgency of the issue at hand, he called for strengthened cooperation among nations to combat this pressing problem effectively.

The virtual Ministerial-level meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on July 7, 2023, marked the launch of the Global Coalition, a platform dedicated to addressing the increasing menace of Synthetic Drug Threats.

 

This coalition aims to unite global efforts in combating the production, trafficking, and detrimental public health effects of illegal synthetic drugs. Its primary goal is to safeguard citizens and foster international cooperation.

The Global Coalition will assemble during influential political gatherings, including the 78th UN General Assembly and the March 2024 UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
